Last week I told the children about the exciting ‘Science Fair,’ run by the ‘Pilot Partnership,’ an organisation that works extensively with Birmingham schools. This is an inter-school competition, the purpose of which is to raise ALL children’s awareness of science as not just a purposeful and fascinating area of the curriculum but also as great fun!

The children have all been invited to participate by investigating and recording their own science project, either by themselves or with a family member. The deadline for entries is Wednesday 13th April so there is plenty of time for your child to complete an entry.

Their entry could be an experiment to answer a question, a problem and solution, or a research project. It can be on any area of science that interests your child and there will be a winner from each phase. (see below for examples)

The science project needs to be presented as shown above. The 3 display boards could be made from pieces of a cardboard box, no taller or wider than one metre, which should stand up by themselves. There will be space in front of the display boards to display any small 3D items.

The children need to bring their completed projects to school on the morning of Wednesday 13th April.  There will be a space allocated for each year group to present their work. The classes will have the opportunity to view the projects during the day and then the exhibition will continue on after school if you wish to come and see the entries for yourself from 3.15pm onwards. The winners will be announced on Thursday 14th April.

The winning entries will then have the opportunity to represent the school in the grand final at King Edwards VI Five Ways School on Monday 19th April.

I can’t wait to see all the exciting ideas the children come up with!

Possible science project titles – Better still, invent your own!

Is yawning contagious?

Do white candles burn faster than coloured candles?

Does the shape of the object make any difference to the shape of the ripples it makes when dropped into water?

What colour bird feeder do birds prefer?

What brand of microwave popcorn pops the best?

Do dream catchers work?

Which fruits can be used to charge a phone?

How many days does it take for bread to get mouldy?

Which tastes best; supermarket ‘home brand’ biscuits/cereals or branded ones? Are there any other differences?
