The Department for Education (DFE) has published statutory guidance for school for “Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education”.

You can view the full guidance here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/relationships-education-relationships-and-sex-education-rse-and-health-education

This is now mandatory for schools to comply with.

As Colebourne we are consulting with the following groups associated with the school:

  • staff
  • parents
  • governors

The purpose of the consultation is to enable these groups to express their views, thoughts and ideas about the policy and the implementation of the requirements.

School has written a draft policy that we are now consulting on.

Parents are invited to attend a Parent Consultation Meeting with Mrs Taylor (Curriculum Leader) and  Mr. Guest (Head Teacher) on:

  • Tuesday 9th November, 9am-10.00am: Early Years, Year 1 and Year 2
  • Tuesday 9th November, 2pm-3pm: Year 3 and Year 4
  • Thursday 11th November, 9am-10.00am: Year 5 and Year 6 (This will also include information about the Science units for Year 5 on puberty and Year 6 on Human Reproduction)

Each of the meetings will cover the range of materials and planning from across the school but a greater time and emphasis will be spent showing the year group specific materials.

Parents who are unable to attend may give their views on the policy and documents completing an online consultation form.
Parents who are able to attend the meetings may also complete the online form but may wish to do so after they have attended the meeting.

This online consultation will run until 6pm on Thursday 18th November 2021 and is for staff, parents and governors to complete.

Key information, including links to overviews and teaching content

The following gives some key information about the school’s approach to relationships and health induction and highlights key aspects of this approach.

The statutory framework for Primary school is divided into two main sections: Health Education, and Relationships Education and has the following sections:

Health Education

  • Families and people who care for me
  • Caring friendships
  • Online relationships
  • Being safe

Relationships Education

  • Mental wellbeing
  • Internet safety and harms
  • Physical health and fitness
  • Healthy eating
  • Drugs, alcohol and tobacco
  • Health and prevention
  • Basic first aid
  • Changing adolescent body

There are weekly PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) lessons in each year group for approximately 30min per week. These sessions will cover all the statutory requirements for Health and Relationships education. Many aspects will also be covered through general day to day interactions, assemblies, stories and through visits and visitors.

We will be following a scheme called JIGSAW. This is a popular scheme many primary schools use and it has a high focus on wellbeing and self-regulation, as well as covering the statutory content.

There are 6 units each year for each year group

  • Being me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing me

We also use some external units instead of a few units which can be seen below.

More details about these units can be seen in the progression map and overviews which you can access in the file section below.

We have also reviewed the Jigsaw content for the changing me units for years 3 and 4 and these will not be fully delivered as the content is already covered in years 5 and 6 science units on puberty and reproduction respectively – further details in the consultation meeting and presentation.

The draft policy is also here:

Please note we have included the full Jigsaw units of work here – some of which we will not be using or will be adapting. More details in the consultation meetings.
