At Colebourne, our phonics and early reading program, based on the  Sounds-Write scheme, is a comprehensive and research-backed approach to literacy education. We prioritise the following key components in our teaching:

1. Phonemic Awareness: We start by developing students’ phonemic awareness, helping them recognise and manipulate individual sounds in words. This foundational skill allows them to grasp the connection between sounds and letters.

2. Systematic Phonics Instruction: Our curriculum systematically introduces letter-sound relationships in a structured sequence, ensuring that students build a strong phonics foundation progressively.

3. Blending and Segmenting: We emphasise the skills of blending sounds to read words and segmenting words into sounds for spelling. This helps students bridge the gap between spoken and written language.

4. High-Quality Resources: We use a range of high-quality resources and materials, including interactive activities, books, and digital tools, to engage and support our students in their learning journey.

5. Supoirted Instruction: Recognising that students progress at different rates and have different starting point, our teachers tailor instruction to meet the diverse needs of each child, providing additional support or challenge when necessary.

6. Continuous Assessment: Regular assessments are conducted to monitor progress and adjust instruction to ensure that every student is making meaningful strides in their reading abilities. These are also shared with parents to help support the learning

7. Parental Involvement: We encourage parents to become active partners in their child’s reading development by providing resources, guidance, and opportunities for involvement in the learning process.

Our goal is to instill a lifelong love for reading and equip students with the skills they need to become confident, proficient readers. We believe that a strong foundation in phonics and early reading is crucial for academic success and personal growth, and we are proud to be a part of your child’s literacy journey at Colebourne.
